Last year George let a broody hen sit on some of his duck eggs and they all hatched. The resultant offspring are Appleyard/Rowan crosses. This year he gave some eggs to Rob & Nina who put them under one of their hens and 8 hatched. Unfortunately a fox took most of their hens and 6 [...]

Happy Ducks

The Beans (collective term for the Black Indian Runners) have trashed their run over winter so they are in a temporary enclosure whilst the mud hopefully becomes grass again. They started laying again in February and Dipti of the Kumars (the original 3 ducks) started on the 29th of February.
String has now stopped laying again. [...]

The Beans (collective term for what used to be the ducklings) are here to stay. Holme Lacy College didn’t need any more drakes so we now have 2 separate duck colonies of 1 drake + 2 ducks each.
The Kumars: Sanjeev, Dipti & Mrs Campbell
The Beans: Bean, String & Sargeant
Mrs Campbell isn’t laying much at all [...]

The ducklings are starting to get lovely glossy feathers now.
Mike has dug in their new pond (sandpit from Argos). After 3 days they have ignored it totally. He has taken it personally and is threatening to withdraw their privileges.
Spike update

I picked Spike up yesterday. He looks as though he has gone 3 rounds with Mike Tyson but is a lot happier than when the eye was still there and injured.
His main problem this morning is that Boogie wants the bed Spike is in, which is identical to his! He will be on cattery duty [...]
